Lamar, Missouri, the Borton county seat, is distinguished as the birthplace of Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States. It is located in Southwest Missouri, north of Joplin. Highway access is excellent, being located at the intersection of US 160 and dual lane US 71.

Truman began humbly in a small white frame house in Lamar. In November 1882 the Trumans bought their 6 room house for $685.00. Mrs. Truman gave birth to her son May 8, 1884 in the downstairs southwest bedroom of the 1 1/2 story house.

The focal point of Lamar, remains the city square, 2nd largest in Missouri. The courthouse is located in the center of the square and was built in 1889.
